Sailing and kayak instruction available
Posted: Tuesday, May 19th, 2009

The 2009 Oregon Boating Foundation’s schedule of sailing and kayak classes begins June 4.

These classes, previously taught through Yaquina Bay Yacht Club, have been a popular Newport event for many years. Sailing classes are divided into several age and ability groups and are taught by U.S. Sailing Certified Instructors. The adult sailing classes start June 4 and Sept. 10. Each class is held over three consecutive weekends with a Thursday evening class each week, thereby allowing for both on and off the water instruction. The week-long, beginning youth sailing classes are scheduled for June 15 and July 20. The newly formed intermediate youth sailing classes are scheduled for the weeks of July 6 and Aug. 17.

Sailing class graduates will learn to ready their boat for sailing and be equipped with the skills needed to safely handle a dingy sailboat.

For registration and further information about the sailing classes, contact www.yaquinabayyachtclub.org, or leave a message at 265-9206 and someone will return your call.

The Coastal Kayak: Basic Strokes and Rescue class will be taught by Tom Murphy, an American Canoe Association certified kayak instructor. Three sessions of two-day classes begin June 27, July 18, and Aug. 29. Instruction includes how to enter and exit the kayak from shore and a dock, basic paddle use, strokes and skills as well as marine hazards and safety concerns. Kayaks are included for student use.

For registration or further information about kayak classes, please Tom Murphy at coastalkayak@msn.com.
