Waldport graduate wins writing award

A 2010 graduate of Waldport High School was one of five winning writers chosen for "The Great Work: Re-imagining Humanity as the Planet Changes," the first annual sustainability writing contest for Oregon State University students. Winners received $100 and a chance to help shape the future.

Dylan McDowell was chosen for his piece "Riding a Green Bike into a Greener tomorrow," about the Green Bike program run by Seashore Family Literacy in Waldport, which provides free bicycles for anyone to use.

A freshman at OSU studying education and fisheries and wildlife, McDowell wrote news and feature stories for the South Lincoln County News and Newport News-Times while in high school. He has also been a reporter for the Daily Barometer, OSU's student-run newspaper.

McDowell's story, along with the other four selections will be published the week of May 16 in the Barometer.
