Research team to retrieve seismometer data

SOUTH BEACH - In the third of seven such ventures scheduled for 2012, a team of scientists headed by Bob Dziak from Oregon State University (OSU)’s Hatfield Marine Science Center headed out July 13 aboard the R/V New Horizon from the San Diego-based Scripps Institute of Oceanography (SIO) to recover 15 of the 25 seismometers they dropped during a similar research cruise in October 2011.

Dziak deemed last year’s venture “an unqualified success,” as the team aboard OSU’s now-retired R/V Wecoma deployed 25 ocean bottom seismometers during an eight-day voyage. That venture is part of an overall ongoing effort aimed at gleaning more seafloor seismic data from what’s known as the Cascadia Subduction Zone off the coasts of Oregon, Washington and California.
