A couple of years ago, Central Oregon Coast Fire and Rescue Captain Dennis Cannon was involved in some rescue operations involving steep descents and embankments that didn’t go so well.

“We had a couple of calls, and we just didn’t have enough people. We were dragging people out,” he said.

One particular instance he recalled involved a person who had fallen down a steep, muddy trail and injured their ankle. It took seven hours to rescue that person, and five emergency responders were injured.

“We finally decided, ‘Hey, this is ridiculous, we’re beating ourselves up, we’re causing injuries to our department members, we’ve got to do something different,” he said.

More than a year later, thanks to the work of Cannon and others, Lincoln County now has a fully trained and equipped technical rope rescue team available.
