Waldport sends two plus relay to state, just misses on more

Posted: Tuesday, May 21st, 2013

Elijah Tucker strides to the finish in the final of the boys 200 meters Saturday. Tucker just missed qualifying for state in this event but will be headed to Hayward as part of the Irish's 4x100 meter relay team.
In windy and drizzly conditions that may have been more reminiscent of their home field in March than the Willamette Valley in late May, the Waldport Irish track team concluded their regular season at the Tri-River Conference meet at Stayton last weekend, posting some high finishes and earning a number of berths in the state meet.

The boys team took second in the district, tying with East Linn Christian at 108.5 meet points. Casey Sell won the long jump with a mark of 20 feet, 2 inches. Sell is one of only three boys from the Tri-River Conference to jump farther than 20 feet this year and was the only one to do so at the district meet.

Head coach Mick Bittick explained that high marks in an extremely competitive league like Tri-River are a good sign for success at the state meet.
