Americans are generally aware that overweight and obesity are risk factors for heart disease and diabetes, but most have not yet recognized the connection between excess weight and cancer. According to the American Institute for Cancer Research, excess weight alone is responsible for over 100,000 new cancer cases every year. Obesity has been shown to dramatically increase the risk of colon cancer, and obesity is estimated to be responsible for up to 35 percent of colon cancer cases.
