Oregon Coast Aquarium hatches companion for Monterey Bay Aquarium’s black oystercatcher

The Oregon Coast Aquarium’s aviculture staff decided to allow the resident pair of oystercatchers they care for to incubate one of their eggs after receiving a request for a companion for the Monterey Bay Aquarium’s black oystercatcher. The bird will join Monterey’s 20-year-old female that was rescued from the wild in Alaska.
A black oystercatcher chick that hatched in the Oregon Coast Aquarium’s Seabird Aviary exhibit this summer boarded a plane in Portland on Aug. 29 to fly south to its new home at the Monterey Bay Aquarium.
