Safety marker honors fallen boys

A little more than two years ago, a sneaker wave swept up onto the rocky shore line in Yachats and took two young men from Eugene back out with it. Thanks to the work of many, a monument now stands near the site that will hopefully keep others from a similar fate.

More than 100 people assembled at the Adobe Resort on Saturday, March 9, to dedicate the Costal Safety Marker erected in honor of Connor Ausland and Jack Harnsongkram, who were swept to their deaths at nearby Smelt Sands State Park on Feb. 5, 2011. The marker, a five-foot high sculpture of basalt and steel, is the culmination of the effort of two years of work by Ausland and Harnsongkram’s parents and others from South Eugene High School, where the two were students.
