Airport’s main runway under construction

More than a dozen graders, earthmovers and large dump trucks were busy last week as the contractor was busy digging up the Newport Municipal Airport main runway two weeks into the five-month project. Contractor High Desert Aggregate and Paving has been working on the north end of the airport’s main (16-34) runway, grinding and then removing asphalt from the center of the north section of the 5,398-foot-long strip. SOUTH BEACH — The ambitious reconstruction of the Newport Municipal Airport main runway is heavy into the destruction phase of the $9.9 million project, and all is going well and on schedule.

The contractor, High Desert Aggregate and Paving, was busy last week grinding and removing asphalt from the north end of the 5,398-foot-long strip and is expected to do the same to the south end during the next week-and-a-half.
