Common Core: the good and the bad

LINCOLN COUNTY — Legislators may make the big decisions, but it’s teachers and parents who have the most interaction with students. And as the time nears for Oregon to start issuing the Smarter Balanced standardized test, some are still torn over the Common Core standards they’re aligned with.

The Lincoln County School District began implementing the Common Core three years ago, and the switchover from the Oregon Assessment of Knowledge and Skills (OAKS) to Smarter Balanced begins next year. Educators like Brian Hanna, who teaches math at Newport High School, have seen samples of questions, but don’t know what to expect on the test yet.
