SEAL ROCK — Work on updates and improvements to Seal Rock Water District (SRWD) will continue with the help of United States Department of Agriculture Rural Development (USDA-RD) funding.

Seal Rock Water District received word last month that the district’s application for funds was approved. USDA-RD funding of about $6 million, including a $2.5 million grant award, will pay for several projects. Proposed improvements include replacing several thousand feet of aged water distribution pipe to eliminate undersized line and provide necessary system looping, installation of 36 fire hydrants in areas with insufficient coverage, and installation of two pressure reducing valves in a low elevation area with excessive distribution pressures. Additionally, SRWD is looking to install a fully automated radio-read meter reading (AMR) system. With the updated system, the district will be able to reduce operating costs by minimizing staff time to manually read meters. The system also has the capability to detect major water leaks at customers’ homes and notify district staff, which SRWD says provides a reduced likelihood for major bills to ratepayers for lost water, while also saving an important resource.
