History comes alive at Cape Perpetua

Posted: Wednesday, Jul 9th, 2014

Tony Farque, aka Gifford Pinchot
The first official Chief of the U.S. Forest Service, Gifford Pinchot, will again visit the Cape Perpetua Visitor Center this Friday between 11 a.m. and 2 p.m.

Pinchot, who turns 148 this year, rose to national prominence under the patronage of President Theodore Roosevelt.

Find the appearance of a man 148 years old hard to believe? Thatís because Pinchot is actually impersonator Tony Farque, actor, cultural historian and U.S. Forest Service archaeologist, who has been imitating the former Chief for many years across the nation.

ďTony is so convincing acting in this past era manner and clothing, that itís hard to imagine that itís not really somehow Pinchot,Ē notes David L. Thompson, who manages a public outreach program for the Siuslaw Forest, called ďValuing People and Places,Ē that helped sponsor his visit.
