NEWPORT — They’re back. A crew of sea lions has returned to their favorite lounging spot — the sea lion docks at Port Dock One along the Newport Bayfront.

Male sea lions typically frequent the docks, and their barks can be heard from throughout Newport.

The sound of sea lion barks, however, grew quiet during most of June and July as the male population migrated to Baja California, Mexico for their annual mating season.

The sea lions have made it safely back to Newport, and they will soon have new docks to lounge around on.

The Newport Sea Lion Docks Foundation has been raising funds for new docks, and they’re very close to reaching their fundraising goal. The $125,000 project includes replacing the current docks as well as the addition of a new public viewing platform. The new docks will cost about $50,000, and the public viewing platform will cost about $75,000.
